That's the solution for normal sky rendering, the original renderer drawed skies as a "plain" texture, but Vavoom's D3D and OpenGL renderers can't draw skies correctly, so Janis implemented a new sky rendering, it doesn't looks that good IMO, but you can solve it using skyboxes <!-- s;) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_wink.gif" alt=";)" title="Wink" /><!-- s;) -->.
